| The east coast of the South Island has some of the best Salmon waters found in the world, the rivers have good runs of salmon from early November through to March. The main salmon rivers are Waiau, Hurunui, Waimakarri, Rakaia, Rangitata and the Waitaki. The most popular of these rivers is the Rakaia. Starting with the Waiau this would be the most underrated Salmon fishery in Canterbury, it has some excellent salmon runs and there is good fish to be caught throughout the season. The Hurunui has some good Salmon runs and is a popular North Canterbury Salmon fishery, most anglers prefer to fish this river at the mouth. The Wiamakarri would be one of the most popular Salmon rivers in Central Canterbury, There is good access to most popular fishing holes on the river as well as good access to the mouth. Although the Salmon runs are not as big as some rivers there is still good fishing to be had throughout the season. The Rakaia river would have to be the best Salmon fishery in Canterbury (more later gone fishing) |
